How do MRI, PET and CAT scans work?
Major advancements in the field of medical imaging now allow healthcare providers to see a clear visual representation of the situation inside a person’s body. This video discusses three of the most commonly used medical imaging techniques: MRI, PET and CAT scans. In three hypothetical scenarios, the video compares and contrasts the three methods in terms of their advantages to the specific medical situation and risks to the patients.
An MRI creates a clear image of the body without posing a serious risk to the patient due to its lack of ionizing radiation.
The clarity and detail of a CAT scan is a focal point when comparing these three techniques, despite its increased risk of cancer due to the ionizing radiation it exposes the patient to. Due to its 3-dimension cross-sectional pictures, CAT scans can be used in a great range of medical complications including the detection of cancer.
By using radioactive tracers, a PET scan differs from the first two techniques in its ability to provide information about organ function rather than just structure. It provides valuable information about functions such as glucose metabolism, oxygen use and blood flow. The PET scan can also provide information at a cellular level.
Finally, the video presents the steps that patients should take to prepare for these tests such as mentioning any previous medical conditions, pregnancy and the presence of metal anywhere on or inside the body which could hinder the results, especially in the MRI and CAT scan.

Lesson 1 - Airway Evaluation: MICU Fellows Airway Course
Christopher Columbus did his homework before "sailing west to go east". Sitting down with the best mapmakers of his day, he calculated the distance from the Western part of Europe to the fabulous riches of the east. He knew what his ships could do as far as speed, what they would need for supplies, and off he went. Yes, America got in the way, but Columbus still has a national holiday in his honor and a circle named after him at the southwest corner of Central Park.
So clearly "planning ahead" is the way to go, even if you end up encountering the unexpected. And so it goes with airway management -- plan ahead with a good airway evaluation. -
Lesson 2 - Preparing for Intubation: MICU Fellows Airway Course
If ever we did a life-saving (if we do it right)/life-losing (if we do it wrong) procedure, then intubation is that procedure. This is not to be taken lightly as NO intubation is routine.
Be a good girl/boy scout -- BE PREPARED. Let's go over the things you'll need to be prepared.
Good Feng Shui.
The Right Drugs
Teamwork -
Lesson 3 - Mask Ventilation: MICU Fellows Airway Course
Rodney Dangerfield made a career and a fortune bemoaning his fate. "I don't get no respect!" He'd grab his signature red tie, pull the knot back and forth, and roll those exophthalmic eyes of his (did he ever get his thyroid function tested?).
Mask ventilation falls into the "I don't get no respect" category. The fame and glory is all in the intubation, and most airway students want to checker jump over the mask ventilation part and get right to the "cool stuff", the laryngoscopy.
Hold your horses!
Mask ventilation is the crucial "walk before you run" part of airway management, and you have to get this down pat. Mask ventilation buys you time, stabilizes the patient, in many cases SAVES the patient, and is the ultimate "fall back" if other airway maneuvers have failed. Plus, masking well sets you up for success in your laryngoscopy, as you will see below.

Coronaviruses are a large family of enveloped, RNA viruses. There are 4 groups of coronaviruses: alpha and beta, originated from bats and rodents; and gamma and delta, originated from avian species. Coronaviruses are responsible for a wide range of diseases in many animals, including livestock and pets. In humans, they were thought to cause mild, self-limiting respiratory infections until 2002, when a beta-coronavirus crossed species barriers from bats to a mammalian host, before jumping to humans, causing the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS, epidemic. More recently, another beta-coronavirus is responsible for the serious Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, MERS, started in 2012. The novel coronavirus responsible for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, COVID-19, is also a beta-coronavirus. The genome of the virus is fully sequenced and appears to be most similar to a strain in bats, suggesting that it also originated from bats. The virus is also very similar to the SARS-coronavirus and is therefore named SARS-coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV 2. At the moment, it’s not yet clear if the virus jumped directly from bats to humans, or if there is a mammalian intermediate host.
Coronavirus genome is a large, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA molecule that contains all information necessary for the making of viral components. The RNA is coated with structural proteins, forming a complex known as nucleocapsid. The nucleocapsid is enclosed in an envelope, which is basically a LIPID membrane with embedded proteins. From the envelope, club-like spikes emanate, giving the appearance of a crown. This is where the “corona” name came from.
The integrity of the envelope is essential for viral infection, and is the Achilles’ heel of the virus, because the lipid membrane can easily be destroyed by lipid solvents such as detergents, alcohol and some disinfectants. In fact, enveloped viruses are the easiest to inactivate when they are outside a host.
In order to infect a host cell, the spikes of the virus must BIND to a molecule on the cell surface, called a receptor. The specificity of this binding explains why viruses are usually species specific – they have receptors in certain species, and not others. Host jumping is usually triggered by mutations in spike proteins which change them in a way that they now can bind to a receptor in a new species.
The novel coronavirus appears to use the same receptor as SARS-coronavirus for entry to human cells, and that receptor is the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, ACE2. Infection usually starts with cells of the respiratory mucosa, then spreads to epithelial cells of alveoli in the lungs.
Receptor binding is followed by fusion of the viral membrane with host cell membrane, and the release of nucleocapsid into the cell. The virus then uses the host machinery to replicate, producing viral RNAs and proteins. These are then assembled into new viral particles, called virions, by budding into intracellular membranes. The new virions are released and the host cell dies.
Uncontrolled growth of the virus destroys respiratory tissues, producing symptoms. Infection triggers the body’s inflammatory response, which brings immune cells to the site to fight the virus. While inflammation is an important defense mechanism, it may become excessive and cause damage to the body’s own tissues, contributing to the severity of the disease. In an otherwise healthy person, there is a good chance that the virus is eventually eliminated and the patient recovers, although some may require supportive treatments. On the other hand, people with weakened immune system or underlying chronic diseases may progress to severe pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome, which can be fatal. -

For more information about custom 3D animation, visit Amerra (http://www.amerra.com).
The PURIST is the next generation of leg positioning device designed specifically for anterior Total Hip Replacement.
Over the last decade, anterior THR has gained widespread acceptance. Today, skilled and experienced surgeons with improved understanding of the requirements for efficient leg positioning and surgical exposure are trying to unburden their OR teams from sometimes cumbersome specialty trauma tables used to perform anterior approach THR. Economic pressures have further accelerated the adoption of no-table techniques that allow surgeons to control leg positioning, range of motion and hip stability more freely. In addition proper and consistent leg rotation and extension can be challenging and tiring without the use of an appropriate device.
The PURIST is designed to boost efficiency and surgeon control throughout the anterior THR procedure.
Equipped with Swiss precision and an ergonomically-shaped design, the PURIST offers many clinical, operational and logistical advantages.
The PURIST enables all essential leg movements necessary for anterior THR in a condensed and efficient manner. It is built to perform independent DA THR movements on a graduated scale and its enhanced design allows the surgeon to control rotation, gross and fine traction intra-operatively and without the help from non-sterile personnel. The boot quick connect facilitates range of motion stability testing. The patented auto traction release mechanism engages automatically when the leg is lowered and restores traction at 0 degrees extension.

common dental procedures: Animated video
most common dental procedures are, fillings and repairs, root canals (endodontics), crowns (caps), bridges and implants, extractions and teeth whitening.
Fillings and Repairs
Restorative materials are used to repair teeth, which have been compromised due to tooth decay (cavities) or trauma. Your dentist may use several methods to determine if you have tooth decay such as cavity detecting dye, x-rays and laser fluorescence cavity detection aids. Tooth trauma can be caused by cracked or broken teeth, teeth that are worn from unusual use such as nail biting, tooth grinding (bruxism) and using your teeth to open things. Different materials can be used to repair teeth, the most common being composite fillings made from a tooth-colored resin which looks and feels like natural teeth. Ask your dentist what material is best for you and your specific needs.
